On December 18, 2020 Governor Jim Justice signed a bill authorizing sports betting in the state of West Virginia. They became the fourth state to legalize online sports betting. The West Virginia lottery began accepting applications from companies interested in operating sportsbooks in the state on March 8, 2021. Two months later on May 8, the West Virginia Lottery awarded licenses to 10 companies to operate sportsbooks in the state.

The first online sportsbooks launched in West Virginia on June 15, 2021. Since its launch, six additional sportsbooks have been added. Sportsbooks such as FanDuel, WynnBET, BetRivers, and Caesars are all authorized in the state.

Since its launch, online sports betting has been a huge success. The first year generated over $200 million in revenue for the industry, with $50 million in tax revenue for the state. With a competitive market and a well-regulated industry, the West Virginia Lottery has helped to ensure that the industry is fair and safe for consumers.
