Governor Ralph Northam authorized sports betting in the state of Virginia on March 2, 2020. The Virginia Lottery began accepting applications from companies interested in operating sportsbooks in the state on January 21, 2022. They awarded licenses to 11 companies on April 1 of the same year, and on May 21, the first online sportsbook launched in Virginia.

There are currently 11 operators that are licensed to offer online sports betting in Virginia. FanDuel, Caesars, BetMGM, DraftKings, and BetRivers are just a few of those authorized.

Since its launch, online sports betting has been a huge success in Virgina. In its first month, the industry generated over $200 million in revenue and $10 million in taxes for the state. With a large population of sports fans, a competitive market, and a well-regulated industry, online sports betting has been a success in Virginia. The future of online sports betting looks bright. The state is expected to continue to see growth in the industry and the Virginia Lottery is working to expand the number of operators that are allowed to offer online sports betting in the state.
