Online sports betting in Tennessee began on November 1, 2022 when the state’s first six online sports books, BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, WynnBET, Caesars, and BetRivers, launched. Since then, the industry has grown rapidly, with 11 more operators now offering online sports betting in the state.
House Bill 1 (HB1) was passed by the Tennessee House of Representatives on April 25, 2019 and by the Tennessee Senate on April 30, 2019. Governor Bill Lee signed the bill into law on May 1, 2019. The bill authorized the Tennessee Department of Revenue (DOR) to issue licenses to operators of online sportsbooks. They began accepting applications for licenses on June 1, 2022, and issued the first six licenses on November 1, 2022, the same day which they launched.
Those in favor of the bill argued that by legalizing online sports betting in Tennessee there would be economic benefits, jobs would be created, and there would be a new source of tax revenue for the state. In the first year, it generated over $1,3 billion in revenue and they collected over $300 million in tax revenue.
