On May 20, 2017 the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for online sports betting. They awarded 14 licenses for online sports betting to 12 companies on June 29, 2017. Almost a year later on May 14, 2018 the first online sportsbook launched in the state of Pennsylvania.
Three years after legalizing online sports betting in the state, the PGCB approved a new set of regulations for online sports betting. These regulations included a number of changes designed to make the industry more competitive and consumer-friendly. In January 2022 the PGCB launched a mobile app that allows players to place sports bets from anywhere in the state.
As of May 2023 there are currently 20 operators that are officially licensed to offer online sports betting in the state. PointsBet, FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, and BetMGM are among those licensed.
In 2021 online sports betting generated $1.2 billion in revenue, which was more than double the amount that had been projected. This is due to the fact that Pennsylvania has not only a competitive market, but a large number of sports fans which provides a large pool of potential customers for online sportsbooks.
In order to bet on sports in Pennsylvania, you must be at least 21 years old.
