Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment to legalize sports betting in the state on December 6, 2018. A year later on December 20, 2019, the Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the legalization of sports betting into law for the state. Another year later, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) awarded the first 10 online sports betting licenses to online sportsbooks.

On January 22, 2021, BetMGM and FanDuel launched their online sportsbooks in Michigan. The remaining eight sportsbooks launched 10 days later on February 1, 2021. In the first year of operation, online sports betting in Michigan generated over $1.2 billion in revenue for the state.
