Illinois

Governor J.B. Pritker signed a bill into law that legalized both online and in-person sports betting in June 2019 with the law taking effect on March 9, 2020. The first online sportsbook launched on Jun 18, 2020.

13 online sportsbooks have launched in Illinois since then including FanDuel, Caesars, BetRivers, PointsBet, WynnBET, DraftKings, and more.

Online sports betting is regulated by the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB), who sets the rules for sports betting in the state and they ensure all operating sportsbooks are doing so in a fair and honest manner.

Since the legalization of sports betting over $2 billion in revenue has been generated for the state. In 2021, Illinoi generated $1.1 billion in revenue, which was the third highest in the United States. The success of the online sports betting industry can be attributed to factors such as the state’s large population, its proximity to major sports markets, and its competitive tax rate.

Illinois residents who are 21 years or older are eligible to participate in sports betting.
