Ex-Alabama star Brandon Miller faces wrongful-death suit

Former Alabama basketball star Brandon Miller, now a rookie with the Charlotte Hornets, is one of three men named in a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the family of a woman who was shot to death in Tuscaloosa in January.

Multiple media outlets reported about the lawsuit on Friday.

The two men charged with killing Jamea Harris — Darius Miles, another former Crimson Tide basketball player, and Michael Davis — are being sued along with Miller. Police did not file charges against Miller.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama Western Division by Harris’ mother, Decarla Raietta Heard, on behalf of Harris’ estate. Harris was 23 years old and had a 5-year-old child at the time of her death.

The lawsuit states that Miles, Davis and Miller “knew or should have known that bringing a dangerous weapon to a dispute and discharging said weapon would likely result in harm to those around them.”

Police allege that Davis fired the shot that killed Harris. Leading up to the incident, Miles allegedly texted Miller and asked him to bring Miles’ gun.

One of Heard’s lawyers, Kirby D. Farris, told ESPN, “(The family) would like to hear testimony from all three of the young men involved concerning what they did, said and saw. The family would like the opportunity, through their attorneys, to investigate why and how the gun was brought to the scene of a confrontation that resulted in the death of their daughter. Once we have had the opportunity to evaluate the evidence in the case, we can make decisions about the degree of culpability, if any, of each.”

Davis’ attorney, John Robbins, told ESPN he wasn’t surprised the suit was filed.

“I haven’t reviewed the lawsuit but Michael will take the appropriate steps to defend himself in this lawsuit as he is in the criminal case,” Robbins said.
