Duke coach Jon Scheyer agrees to deal through 2028-29

Duke coach Jon Scheyer confirmed Friday night that he has agreed to a contract extension with the famed basketball program.

ESPN reported earlier Friday that Scheyer was receiving an extension through the 2028-29 season.

“I’m lucky to be at Duke,” Scheyer said after the school’s annual Countdown to Craziness event inside Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

“To get that done is great — it’s important. I’m committed to Duke. To know that they’re committed to me as well and our staff — and the job we’ve done — is great.”

Scheyer, 36, is beginning his second season as the replacement for legendary Mike Krzyzewski.

Duke went 27-9 in Scheyer’s first season as coach. The Blue Devils reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing 65-52 to Tennessee.

Duke won the Atlantic Coast Conference postseason tournament, making Scheyer the first person to win the conference tournament title as both a player (2009, 2010) and a coach.

Duke hasn’t formally announced the extension but Scheyer said during his press conference that he had been in discussions with athletic director Nina King “for some time.”

“Hopefully, everybody in this room knows I’m committed to Duke, too,” Scheyer said. “That’s been something for me — seeing the crowd tonight, seeing the support — it’s been such a special thing. It’s an honor for me to be the coach and I’ll never take that for granted.”

Scheyer was a standout player who scored 2,077 career points for the Blue Devils from 2006-10 and joined the Duke coaching staff as an assistant prior to the 2013-14 season. He became associate head coach prior to the 2018-19 season and was announced as the eventual replacement for Coach K in June 2021.

Duke opens the season on Nov. 6 against visiting Dartmouth.
